I remember watching the news...
...seeing the looks on their faces when they finally realized that the fire wasn't just a fire.
...that the small plane (probably a personal jet) wasn't a small plane, but was an airliner.
...and finally that it was happening again as we all watched.
Watching it unfold is something none of us will ever, can ever, forget. Horror. Terror. Exactly what was intended by those actions. But, we live free - so free, in fact, that today when I talked to my students about the significance of the day, one said "Oh, so that's why the date looks familiar." We're so free that parents don't have to talk to their kids about what happened that day six years ago. We don't have to remember. We don't have to act. But we do remember and we do act...for the very reason that we are free. Thank God for that.

Were you on campus when you heard the news?
I was in my art class. My co-teacher, Cindy, had first period off,saw the news in the teacher's lounge and came to tell me something very wrong was happening at the twin towers. We had been in New York in April 2001 for an art conference and viewed the towers from the top of the Empire State Building. I turned on my radio and told my students I thought the day would be one that was comparable to the day JFK was shot and the day the space shuttle Challenger exoploded in 1986. It definitely was. Our comfortable, secure world was changed forever. Thanks for the tribute and continuing to remind your students of the importance of the day.
Great post, Amy. It's interesting to read about your students' comments - wow. My 12 year old doesn't remember anything about the day -except the images he's seen in rerun.
being in europe the day had a hard feel to it - so many people that had experienced it as something that happened to someone else - empathy, yes... but memories and pain... maybe not so much. The today europe is just frightened that our decision to act politically puts them in a very dangerous place - being so close to the evil. it hurt.
